Sci-Fi's Battlestar Galactica
Subject: Kara Thrace/Lee Adama
Title: PARALLELS (This Boy | This Girl)
Tracks: 14
Length: ?
Warnings: Spoilers for the whole series simply because I explain aspects of both Kara's and Lee’s backgrounds which are revealed in spurts throughout the show. Honestly nothing TOO spoilery for the actual plot itself.
Features: Natalie Imbruglia, Alanis Morisette, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle and more.

I see Kara and Lee as two sides of the same coin having very parallel kind of lives, experiences, etc. They might outwardly express their reactions a little differently. but  in the end they are very similar people.

This mix is my attempt to highlight how they’re linked in other ways besides their relationship.Which is the heart of the reason why they understand each other  so well and in that same respect know just how to push each others buttons.

This Boy - James Morrison
(♪play sample)
Well,  the lyrics are pretty self explanatory of children facing disappointment from their parents. This is really the first song that got me started on the whole concept behind this mix.

This boy wants to play,

there's no time left today

It's a shame cause he has to go home

This boy's got to work, got to sweat

just to pay what he gets to get left all alone

This girl tries her best everyday,

but it's all gone to waste

cause there's no one around

This girl she can draw, she can paint

Likes to dance, she can skate,

now she don't make a sound

Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins
(♪play sample)
I read sometime ago that this song was written by Billy Corgan about basically disowning his parents who never supported him as a child. If you twist the meaning of the lyrics some it also shows how their relationships with their families kind of screwed up their ability to have a functional relationship together. When you’re used to disappointment it’s very difficult to overcome that and start trusting people - especially yourself.

Disarm you with a smile

And leave you like they left me here

To wither in denial

The bitterness of one who's left alone

Ooh, the years burn

Smoke - Natalie Imbruglia
More family abandonment issues.... are we getting depressed yet? Bear with me! heh This one really makes me think of how both Kara and Lee grew up always having to be the ones to deal with their mothers. Each hoping their respective fathers would be back and then after several years just taking the role of “the strong one” simply because someone had to.

My mouth is dry, Forgot how to cry,

Whats up with that, Your hurting me,

I'm running fast, Can't Hide the past,

What's up with that, Your pushing me,

Perfect - Alanis Morisette
(♪play sample)
A song about living up to your parents expectations. I promise it starts to light up (mostly) for the rest of the mix. The lyrics are very fitting to both Kara and Lee’s relationships with their parents as kids/young adults and wanting to get away from the people who were over-demanding and under-supportive. Those kind of demanding expectations place a heavy burden on a kid who should just be worrying about being a kid and exploring all avenues and careers.

Sometimes is never quite enough

If you're flawless, then you'll win my love

Don't forget to win first place

Don't forget to keep that smile on your face

Twilight Galaxy - Metric
(♪play sample)
A song that to me feels like growing up and rejecting society and your family’s expectations. It’s about being happy to find your own way even if others think you’re wrong. Kara fought the expectations to enter the military not wanting to follow in her mother’s footsteps at all. Conversely, Lee did follow in his father’s footsteps seemingly almost blind to the fact that he could have done anything he wanted. I think this is the main reason why later on Lee had so much resentment of his father, feeling like he practically was denied the freedom to pursue other careers.

Did they tell you, you should grow up

When you wanted to dream

Did they warn you, better shape up

If you want to succeed

I don't know about you, who are they talking to?

They aren't talking to me.

Over and Out - Foo Fighters
(♪play sample)
I read that Dave Ghrol wrote this about his belief in aliens. :) I just thought the lyrics fit well with both pilot’s need and desire to get in the air since that’s where they feel most comfortable. The chorus also very much makes me think of both their sense of loss and guilt when Zak dies. (Are you there? I don’t feel you anymore.)

Chase me through the dark

Ready on your mark

First to reach the stars

Wins a broken heart

War is Kind - Jakob Dylan
(♪play sample)
I could be misinterpreting this song’s meaning but it makes me think about how living through times of war and being in a military family really shapes people’s personalities. The first Cylon war so heavily influenced both Kara’s and Lee’s parents that it’s almost like they don’t know how to function in “times of peace” - always on the edge waiting and expecting something bad to happen.

Like a lost dog between houses

In the unknown open country

Like an outlaw now standing

At the foot of infinity

The sun is wild

And just in front of me

Rainy Day - Guster
(♪play sample)
Ok, I swear this is the last really depressing song! But the truth is I adore this song in masochistic way. It’s so powerful and raw with pain. It makes me think of poor pilots suffering immense pain and guilt yet again! This time over losing Zak. By now it’s second nature to them to shove the pain deep inside and keep on going. My poor damaged pilots! :(

I will build a wall

Sensing trouble from a mile away

I will build a wall

Saw it coming from a mile away

When your inside's out

I don't even try

I know I have seen the best I'll have

Extraordinary Machine - Fiona Apple
(♪play sample)
I just LOVE this song for pilots. Reminds me of their fight during “Unfinished Business.”  :) I think it shows that they are similar in how they react to their problems but different in how they outwardly handle them.

I still only travel by foot

And by foot it's a slow climb

But I'm good at being uncomfortable, so

I can't stop changing all the time

He'll hitch a ride with any guide

As long as they go fast from whence he came

But he's no good at being uncomfortable, so

He can't stop staying exactly the same

Be kind to me

Or treat me mean

I'll make the most of it

I'm an extraordinary machine

Rocketship - Shiny Toy Guns
(♪play sample)
Ok, not going to lie, I threw this in just for fun to have something piloty but NOT depressing. hee! So... Pilots love flying! It’s their safe place. That is all. :)

Say goodnight to gravity

Hold on to me

The passing stars light the way

The future's here today

It's you and me tonight

Leave it all behind

Song 2 - Blur
(♪play sample)
This song always always gets my adrenaline pumping and makes me want to run or drive my car as fast as I possibly can. Naturally, I assume that feeling would be increased by about a million times in a fighter jet! The lyrics themselves actually fit them very well... but more than anything it’s the energy of this song that makes me think of HOT and dirty, adrenaline pumping, pulse racing flying - and other things. ;)

I got my head checked

By a jumbo jet

It wasn't easy

But nothing is

The Good Soldier - Nine Inch Nails
(♪play sample)
I’m sure it’s no secret that NIN have all kinds of BSG worthy post-apocalyptic themed songs. This song in particular makes me think of the attack on the Colonies and both of them having their lives forever changed and uprooted.

Gunfire in the street

Where we used to meet

Echoes that are beat

When the bass goes 'bomb'

Right over my head

Step over the dead

Remember what you said

A Stranger - A Perfect Circle
(♪play sample)
This is a kind of cryptic love song. But, that’s them. :) No matter how hard Kara and Lee try to deny it or pass it off as pure attraction you can tell, right from the very beginning they recognize the deep and intense connection between themselves. They both refuse to grasp it though for fear of hurting Zak as well as just plain fear of abandonment ingrained into them since childhood.

And I listen for the whisper

Of your sweet insanity

while I formulate denials

of your effect on me

You're a stranger

So what do i care

Home to Me - Josh Kelley
(♪play sample)
Ok, after all that angst and adrenaline I just had to end on an adorable love song that fits them perfectly. :) They’re “home” to each other and always come back  to that despite how many times they might get it wrong.

Isn't it funny how the roads just pass us by

Isn't it crazy how we never get it right

Time is wasted on money and money wasted on lust.

Treat her like a lady and she'll never get enough

Cause you are home to me

Its you that I'm runnin’ to baby

Its you that I'm feelin’ for lately and

Its like a pain that never goes away

and it always starts today
